Can you tell us what the multidimensional neurodiversity profiler is and how it works?
Beyond Profiler is a tool designed to give a holistic view of an individual’s functioning across key areas such as executive functioning, attention, sensory processing, social skills and emotional skills. But it’s not just about developing the understanding, or outputting a spiky profile, it works by translating that understanding into actionable strategies for parents/carers, schools and support workers to make skill development and support easier and more doable. It helps people, educators, and families understand the unique strengths and needs of neurodiverse individuals, towards embracing inclusion in a real sense.
How is this different from other neurodiversity assessments available today?
What makes Beyond Profiler unique is its deep multidimensional approach that is translated into actionable strategies. Other tools are limited in that they are too narrow and simply output data, but Beyond Profiler considers a broader range of factors, including cognitive strengths, sensory preferences, communication styles, and emotional regulation and translates functioning outcomes into actionable strategies that are easy to implement. This gives a more comprehensive picture of an individual’s unique profile, rather than simply labelling them or pointing out a whole set of so called ‘deficits’. Another key feature is the NDIS Add-On which is also unique to Beyond Profiler and one that empowers parents to advocate for their child within support meetings.
Who can benefit from using this profiler?
Our current release of Beyond Profiler is the child version and is designed for parents, to help them better understand and support their child at home. For educators, it provides valuable insights into students' support needs within the school setting and how to action those. Also, Coordinators of Support, Social and Community Workers can use it to create more inclusive practices by understanding how to support their neurodivergent clients. One key feature is the NDIS Add-On, which builds on the information of the profiler to develop a report that identifies the level of supports that child needs across the 6 NDIS support categories and then provides information for parents on how to advocate for their child’s needs within those specific areas based on their level of need.
Can you share any specific features of the profiler that stand out?
Beyond Profiler is a strengths based, neuro-affirming and practical support tool. One of the key features is its ability to generate personalized profiles with actionable insights. For example, if someone has a strong visual learning preference but struggles with auditory processing, Beyond Profiler will highlight strategies that can support them. It also emphasizes positive traits, like problem-solving skills, which can often be overlooked. However, while our focus is on supporting neurodivergent individuals, the way Beyond Profiler is actually designed it can provide a unique profile of strengths and supports for any child, it’s not limited in that respect.
What impact do you hope the profiler will have on the neurodiverse community?
Our goal is to empower neurodivergent individuals, their families, and people within their network by providing them with a tool that helps articulate their strengths and needs in a clear, comprehensive way. We also hope it will increase awareness and understanding among educators, employers, and the broader community, so that inclusion moves beyond being a buzzword and becomes so much a part of life that it’s not necessarily a conscious act.
How was Beyond Profiler designed?
We worked closely with neurodivergent community, with neurodivergent individuals, experts, and advocates throughout the development process to ensure the profiler is respectful and empowering. We incorporated these consultations with years of clinical experience in working with neurodivergent clients and families in our allied health clinics and also within the HR space. We did research and work with some of Australia’s top performing large companies and individuals within those companies, to more fully understand the current workplace environment and it’s particular challenges with neurodiversity inclusion. We also spent a lot of time at a variety of private and public schools and early childhood centres to understand their unique environment’s needs with understanding and supporting neurodivergence. It’s not about labelling or ‘fixing’ people, but rather celebrating their differences and providing insights that help them thrive in their own unique way.
